NFL Week 17: Indianapolis Colts (2-13) at Jacksonville Jaguars (4-11)

So why are we previewing a totally meaningless game between Indianapolis and Jacksonville, two teams who have combined for six wins? Because of Andrew Luck. The Colts will get the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft if they lose and the chance to take Luck ? thus that could mean the end of Peyton Manning?s Hall of Fame career in Indy. The Colts also would get the top pick if they win and the Rams somehow upset San Francisco.

Two consecutive wins after an 0-13 start have left Indianapolis tied with St. Louis for the worst record in the league in the race for Luck. If the Colts and Rams finish tied, Indianapolis would ?win? the rights to the No. 1 pick in April?s draft based on the lower opposition winning percentage. Colts players have insisted they will play to win the game. Win or lose, Jacksonville is assured of a pick in the top eight.

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew enters the game leading the league with 1,437 yards rushing, 128 ahead of LeSean McCoy. Jones-Drew has a good chance to secure his first career rushing title against the Colts? 29th-ranked run defense. He rushed for 114 yards and a TD in Jacksonville?s 17-3 win over Indianapolis in Week 10. If he does win the rushing title, Jones-Drew would become just the second player since 1995 to lead the league in rushing while having the NFL?s worst passing offense. Baltimore?s Jamal Lewis also did it in 2003.

As losers of five of their last six, there hasn?t been much to cheer about lately for the Jaguars. A win and a rushing title for Jones-Drew would be a pleasant send-off for outgoing owner Wayne Weaver, who officially hands control of the team over to Shahid Khan on Jan. 4.

Is this the final game in a Colts uniform for veteran mainstays WR Reggie Wayne, C Jeff Saturday and DE Robert Mathis? Each is in the final year of his contract, and a roster overhaul could be in the works after the Colts? worst season in over a decade. Wayne, who is 113 yards shy of his eighth consecutive 1,000-yard season, is second in franchise history in receptions (854), receiving yards (11,635) and TD catches (73). Mathis is second on the Colts? all-time sack list with 82.5. Saturday is fifth in Colts history with 196 games played.

Running strong, Paul back on Iowa campaign trail

(AP) ? Republican presidential contender Ron Paul is back in Iowa, running strongly in the polls and questioning why U.S. troops are in Korea and other parts of the world.

In an appearance Wednesday in Newton, Paul strongly suggested U.S. forces be withdrawn from South Korea, Japan and Germany, and made the audience laugh when he questioned President Barack Obama's decision to send Marines to Australia.

The 76-year-old Paul said American troops have been in Korea since he was in high school. He omitted any mention of the death of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Il and the uncertainty it's causing in Asia.

Obama's recent announcement that some Marines will be stationed in Australia was seen as a signal to China that the U.S. intends to maintain a presence in the Pacific.

(AP) ? Four-star general-turned-CIA director David Petraeus almost resigned as Afghanistan war commander over President Barack Obama's decision to quickly draw down surge forces, according to a new insider's look at Petraeus' 37-year Army career.

Petraeus decided that resigning would be a "selfish, grandstanding move with huge political ramifications" and that now was "time to salute and carry on," according to a forthcoming biography.

Author and Petraeus confidante Paula Broadwell had extensive access to the general in Afghanistan and Washington for "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," due from Penguin Press in January. The Associated Press was given an advance copy.

The book traces Petraeus' career from West Point cadet to his command of two wars deemed unwinnable: Iraq and Afghanistan. Co-authored with The Washington Post's Vernon Loeb, the nearly 400-page book is part history lesson through Petraeus' eyes, part hagiography and part defense of the counterinsurgency strategy he applied in both wars.

Critics of counterinsurgency argue the strategy has not yet proved a success, with violence spiking in Iraq after the departure of U.S. troops, and Afghan local forces deemed ill-prepared to take over by the 2014 deadline.

The book unapologetically casts Petraeus in the hero's role, as in this description of the Afghanistan campaign: "There was a new strategic force released on Kabul: Petraeus' will."

Broadwell does acknowledge that Petraeus rubs some people the wrong way.

"His critics fault him for ambition and self-promotion," she writes. But she adds that "his energy, optimism and will to win stand out more for me."

The book also is peppered with Petraeus quotes that sound like olive branches meant to soothe Obama aides who feared Petraeus would challenge their boss for the White House.

"Petraeus tried to make clear that he and Obama were in synch," Broadwell writes of Petraeus' Senate testimony on the Afghan war.

The book describes Petraeus' frustration at still being labeled an outsider from the Obama administration, even as he retired from the military at Obama's request before taking the job last summer as the CIA's 20th director.

The book depicts Petraeus' rise at an unrelenting, near-superhuman pace. He starts his career as a fiercely competitive West Point cadet known as "Peaches," where he famously wooed the school superintendent's daughter, Holly Knowlton. He went on to command the 101st Airborne Division as part of the invasion of Iraq, then masterminded the rewrite of the Army and Marine Corps' counterinsurgency training manual before returning to command the surge in Baghdad. He was then appointed to head Central Command, overseeing the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as military affairs across much of the Gulf and the Mideast.

He accepted a cut in authority and pay to lead the Afghanistan war campaign when Gen. Stanley McChrystal was forced to resign after a Rolling Stone article that "scorched the general (McChrystal) and his aides, caricaturing them as testosterone-addled frat boys as they insulted Obama" and other officials, Broadwell writes.

She describes how Petraeus' first act was to lift McChrystal's restrictions on the use of force ? especially on airstrikes ? if civilians were nearby.

"There is no question about our commitment to reducing civilian loss of life," Petraeus told his staff. There was, however, "a clear moral imperative to make sure we are fully supporting our troops in combat."

Broadwell adds that the problem, according to Petraeus, was less McChrystal's order than how it was even more strictly re-interpreted by lower commanders.

In her account, Petraeus also faults McChrystal for overpromising and underdelivering in places like Taliban-riddled Marjah in the south, producing months of embarrassing headlines that hurt the war effort back in Washington.

But the book also includes Petraeus' own Rolling Stone-esque moment, when he was quoted badmouthing the White House in Bob Woodward's latest book, "Obama's Wars." A frustrated Petraeus is described as telling his inner circle, on a flight after a glass of wine, that "the administration was (expletive) with the wrong guy."

"Petraeus later expressed his displeasure to all of them for betraying his confidence," Broadwell wrote. "But he knew he was ultimately responsible for making the intemperate remark," a candid admission, through Broadwell, of his lapse in judgment.

He also concedes the Afghan war is not yet won.

"He had wanted to hand (Marine Corps Gen. John) Allen ... a war that had taken a decisive turn," Broadwell writes of what had been Petraeus' goal for his successor. "He knew that, despite the hard-fought progress, that wasn't yet the case."

Yet that admission also presents a get-out clause when combined with the book's account that he considered resigning over the rapid drawdown of troops, neatly removing Petraeus from responsibility if the war goes wrong.

And the account does nothing to puncture the mythology his troops built up around him, something an early mentor, retired Gen. Jack Galvin, told Petraeus to embrace.

"They want you to be bigger than you are, so they magnify you," Galvin said in an interview with Broadwell. "Live up to it all with the highest standards of integrity. You become part of a legend."

"All In" fits neatly into that.

$5,000 Stolen From Church In New Kensington

NEW KENSINGTON (KDKA) ? Hundreds of parishioners came to Mount Saint Peter Church in New Kensington this Christmas weekend to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

But sometime between the conclusion of midnight mass and the service on Christmas morning, thieves broke in stealing roughly $5,000 in Christmas offerings.

?These people are career-minded in criminal activity,? New Kensington Police Chief Ron Zellers said. ?They know the amount of money that the churches are receiving during the holiday.?

The thieves got in by breaking a cross window in the office door and reaching inside to open the lock.

?Once inside the church they went to the office area where they rummaged through the office where they did find the Christmas mass offerings and did take them,? Chief Zellers said.

Just last week, the nearby United Presbyterian Church was also hit. Thieves there got away with several computers and about $500 that had been raised for a mission trip.

The suspects in both of these burglaries have the same M.O. That?s why police are now warning other churches in town to step up security and be on guard.

?There is a chance it?s the same individuals involved. We do have some persons of interest that we?re looking at, but of course this is early in investigation and we?ll see where it goes,? Chief Zellers said.

Back in October, law enforcement officers from across the country travelled to Mount Saint Peter Church for the funeral of fallen Lower Burrell Police Officer Derek Kotecki.

The pastor of the church tells police he is planning to install a security camera as soon as possible.

?It?s very sad, very sad. During the holidays these churches help the homeless, they feed people, they do a lot of things for the less fortunate in the community and then to see a church or churches get hit ? it?s just a very sad thing,? Chief Zellers added.

3 people dead in storm off Russia's east coast (AP)

MOSCOW ? Rescue vessels and a helicopter are searching for five people missing in a fierce storm off Russia's east coast after a Cambodia-flagged ship sank early Sunday.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry said in a statement that it has recovered three bodies from the icy waters of the La Perouse Strait, which lies between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan.

The accident took place in the same waters in which a Russian floating oil rig capsized and sank last Sunday killing 17 people. Thirty-six people are still missing, feared dead.

Officials said five of the Cambodia-flagged ship's crew were Russian, and the others are Indonesian. Two of the dead have been identified as Russian nationals, and one remains unidentified.

The ship, named Ginga, was sailing through the Russian waters from a Japanese port. Russian news agencies reported that it was a fishing boat.

Emergencies Ministry representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Two trawlers, a Russian helicopter, a rescue vessel, two steamboats and a Japanese maritime safety department ship were conducting the search. Efforts were hampered by strong winds and meters-high waves.

Nikolay Sukhanov, a top official from Russia's Sailors Union, told RIA Novosti that he thought that the size of the crew, its flag and route could suggest that the ship was poaching in the waters on the Russian-Japanese maritime border.

Twitter Extinct doneWhere do you publish first if you have more Facebook subscribers than Twitter followers? ?That's a question more and more journalists are going to be asking themselves. Just 3.5 months after the launch of Facebook's late entry into?asymmetrical following, many individual content producers including?TechCrunch's MG Siegler, The New York Times'?Nick Bilton, and myself have have seen our subscriber counts surpass our follower tally. How? Because Facebook's larger user count makes it easier to amass subscribers.

DirecTV HDUI is rolling out across the land, iPad app adds 12 more live streaming channels

DirecTV began quietly seeding its HDUI to customers back in November, but judging by our tips inbox it has recently picked up the pace of the rollout. It's live in many areas already where you're probably enjoying the sweet, sweet new guide with its 16x9 graphics and speedier interface, but if you don't yet have it, check out the thread at DBSTalk with estimated rollout dates for many areas. Also by way of the forum comes word of 12 new channels including AMC, Velocity and HD Net that were just added to DirecTV's live TV streaming iPad app. Of course, the update still won't play nicely with jailbroken iPads, so a cracked version will be required in those cases. Check out the list of channels after the break, if you're not seeing them in the app try hitting the "edit" button at the top right, finding them in the list and clicking the green plus symbol to add them manually.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Pakistan information minister withdraws resignation (Reuters)

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? Pakistan's information minister withdrew her resignation on Sunday, hours after she offered to quit amid tensions between the civilian government and the country's powerful military over a memo alleging an army plot to seize power in May.

Information Minister Firdos Ashiq Awan made the surprise announcement at a televised cabinet meeting but Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani later persuaded her to withdraw resignation.

"The prime minister tore down my resignation and asked me to continue my work," Information Minister Firdos Ashiq Awan told reporters after the cabinet meeting .

Some media reports suggested that Awan offered to resign over criticism within the ruling party over her perceived failure to defend the government in the "memogate" scandal, as it is being called in Pakistan.

Tensions have been running high between the government and the powerful army after the scandal surfaced, raising concerns for the region and for Pakistan's already uneasy relationship with its key ally, the United States.

Mansoor Ijaz, an American businessman of Pakistan origin, wrote in a column in the Financial Times on October 10 that a senior Pakistani diplomat had asked that a memo be delivered to the Pentagon with a plea for U.S. help to stave off a military coup in the days after the raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May.

Ijaz later identified the diplomat as Pakistan's ambassador to Washington, Husain Haqqani, who denied involvement but resigned over the controversy.

The scandal has reached a fever pitch, and rumors have swirled in recent weeks that President Asif Ali Zardari, who left Pakistan for medical treatment in Dubai earlier this month, would be forced out by the military, which has ruled Pakistan for almost half of its 64-year history.

Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani has ruled out the possibility of a coup and the military does not want to be seen as interfering in civilian politics, but there are still several scenarios under which Zardari could be forced out.

The military could use its extensive influence to isolate Zardari, or offer him an honorable exit by guaranteeing he will not face prosecution on long-standing corruption charges.

Kayani has already called for an investigation into who may have been behind the memo which could further undermine the deeply unpopular Zardari.

The Supreme Court is looking into a petition demanding an inquiry into the matter.

US: Mistakes led to attack on Pakistani soldiers

(AP) ? An investigation into a NATO attack that killed 24 Pakistani troops last month near the Afghan border has concluded that a combination of mistrust and bad maps led to the airstrikes on two Pakistani outposts, the U.S. Department of Defense and a NATO official said on Thursday.

"The report says we recognize we made mistakes, and that mistakes were also made by the Pakistanis," said the NATO official, who could not be named because the Defense Department's investigation has not yet been made public.

"We have a lot of work to do to improve coordination, and we've already implemented steps to do that," the official said.

The Defense Department said in a statement Thursday that the investigation found U.S. forces ? given what information they had available to them at the time ? reacted in self-defense and with appropriate force after being fired upon from the direction of the Pakistani border in the Nov. 26 incident.

"Inadequate coordination by U.S. and Pakistani military officers operating through the border coordination center ? including our reliance on incorrect mapping information shared with the Pakistani liaison officer ? resulted in a misunderstanding about the true location of Pakistani military units," said the statement, which was released in Washington.

"This, coupled with other gaps in information about the activities and placement of units from both sides, contributed to the tragic result," it said.

NATO, Afghanistan and Pakistan forces use the joint border control centers to share information and coordinate security operations.

Since the Nov. 26 attack on the Pakistani military outposts on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan in mountainous east Kunar province, a furious Pakistani government has shut down NATO supply routes to Afghanistan and thrown the U.S. out of its Shamsi Air base in southwestern Baluchistan province. The base was used to maintain drones used in strikes against insurgents hiding in safe havens in Pakistan's lawless tribal belt on the Afghan frontier.

"For the loss of life ? and for the lack of proper coordination between U.S. and Pakistani forces that contributed to those losses ? we express our deepest regret. We further express sincere condolences to the Pakistani people, to the Pakistani government, and most importantly to the families of the Pakistani soldiers who were killed or wounded," the statement said.

It added that the military's focus would now be to learn from the mistakes and "take whatever corrective measures are required to ensure an incident like this is not repeated."

"More critically, we must work to improve the level of trust between our two countries. We cannot operate effectively on the border ? or in other parts of our relationship ? without addressing the fundamental trust still lacking between us. We earnestly hope the Pakistani military will join us in bridging that gap," the statement said.

The NATO official said the incident occurred after a company-sized joint U.S.-Afghan commando unit operating in the Afghan side of the border in eastern Kunar province came under fire from the direction of the border. A company is about 150 troops.

The unit, which could not withdraw safely due to the nature of the terrain, then attempted to determine that the fire wasn't coming from anywhere near Pakistani positions, in order to avoid hitting them, the official said.

At that point "mistakes were made" because different mapping systems were used to determine the exact location of the firefight, he said. Discrepancies on how the border was marked on different maps led the unit to believe they could safely return fire. They then called in airstrikes from F-15 fighter bombers, Apache attack helicopters and an AC-130 Spectre gunship.

"There was also an element of mistrust that contributed to the mistakes," the official said, citing the report.

ITC sides with Apple in patent dispute with HTC

Published: Dec 20, 2011 at 11:23 AM PST
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A federal agency is siding with Apple and ordering an import ban on HTC phones that infringe on a patent belonging to the iPhone maker.

The U.S. International Trade Commission said Monday that the ban will take effect April 19 so that wireless carriers will have time to adjust their plans. The ITC said in a final ruling that HTC Corp. may import some refurbished phones to offer customers as replacements under warranties and insurance plans. HTC, which is based in Taiwan, is a major maker of phones that use Google Inc.'s Android operating software.

Apple Inc. had initially complained about HTC violating several of its patents in April 2010, though the commission narrowed its decision down to just one patent. The patent in question deals with data detection, enabling smartphone functions such as the ability to tap on a phone number or address contained in an email to immediately call the number or find the address on a map.

It's not immediately known which phones are covered by the ban. In an e-mailed statement, HTC general counsel Grace Lei said the patent in question affects a small part of the user experience and it will soon remove it from any affected phones.

Apple spokeswoman Kristen Huguet reiterated an earlier statement, saying competitors should create their own technology.

The case is part of a broader dispute involving Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple, HTC and other phone makers. In federal courts and before the ITC, companies have been accusing one another of stealing ideas for popular phone features. While the courts can award damages, the commission has the power to block imports of products and parts made with contested technology.

The U.S. International Trade Commission issued an initial ruling in October that Apple's iPhone does not violate four patents owned by HTC, a blow to the company.

Shootings in Mexico's Veracruz kill 16

MEXICO CITY - At least 11 people were killed by an armed gang on Thursday in the Mexican Gulf coast state of Veracruz, where drug-related violence flared this autumn, before five of the gunmen were shot dead by security forces.

A spokeswoman for the state government told local television the gunmen killed four people in the small town of El Higo then attacked three buses on a highway about 60 miles southwest of the port of Tampico, killing seven others.

Five armed men were killed in a shootout with security forces, she said.

The death toll from the bus shootings could be as high as 20, a local mayor told Milenio television.

The motive was unclear. The attacks came the day after the state government said it disbanded the municipal police force in the city of Veracruz, some 300 miles south of Tampico.

As part of efforts in Mexico to root out corruption in local law enforcement, roughly 1,000 police officials are temporarily being replaced by the navy in Veracruz and the neighboring municipality of Boca del Rio, local media said.

The state is home to several of Mexico's major oil installations and the important oil-exporting port Coatzacoalcos, just south of the city of Veracruz.

Between late September and early October, close to 100 bodies were found dumped in Veracruz city during an outbreak of drug violence, prompting the federal government to send in reinforcements.

Officials blamed the bloodletting on a group linked to the country's most powerful drug lord, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman. He has been fighting a turf war with the violent Zetas cartel, which authorities say controls Veracruz.

More than 45,000 people have been killed since President Felipe Calderon launched a war on drug cartels in late 2006.

In August, Calderon said drug gangs, which can offer police officers much higher pay than the state, had corrupted all levels of government in Mexico.

Nike profit up 3 percent in 2Q (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Nike Inc.'s second-quarter profit rose 3 percent as strong demand and higher prices for its shoes, clothes and gear offset increased costs.

Nike and other consumer product companies have been coping for some time with higher costs for materials, labor and freight. But while others have struggled to regain their footing in the weak U.S. economy, the world's largest athletic shoe and clothing company has been able to increase sales and raise prices without consumer backlash.

"We're able to accomplish this by staying focused on what we do best - deliver innovative products and experiences that serve athletes, inspire consumers and reward our shareholders," said Mark Parker, Nike's CEO.

The company, based in Beaverton, Ore., reported Tuesday that it earned $469 million, or $1 per share, for the quarter that ended Nov. 30. That's up from $457 million, or 94 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Nike's total revenue increased 18 percent to $5.73 billion as it sold more of its branded products in nearly every market around the globe.

The quarter beat analysts' expectations for the quarter of 97 cents per share on revenue of $5.63 billion, according to FactSet.

During the quarter, some of its most popular lines were in basketball and running, with Nike noting that it hasn't seen this much energy around running since the original boom in the sport during the 1970s. Additionally, strong sales at Converse more than offset lower revenue from the Nike Golf, Cole Haan, Hurley and Umbro brands.

Nike leaders expressed confidence in the company's future sales growth as the NBA season resumes and it prepares to launch a number of new products in anticipation of major athletic events such as the summer Olympics.

As an indication of what is ahead, Nike disclosed that orders for items that were scheduled to be delivered between December and April rose 13 percent by comparison to the same period last year. Investors keep a close eye on this measure as an indicator of demand for the coming period.

Going forward, some of Nike's costs are beginning to ease up. But the company said that won't make a difference to its bottom line for several quarters.

Nike plans to raise prices further this year to help relieve some of its margin pressures. The company did not disclose how much it will increase prices but said the hikes would be larger than those put in place during the past year. As a result of these price hikes and a seemingly endless appetite for its products, the company expects its gross margin declines to narrow over the balance of the year.

Nike's shares rose 25 cents to close at $93.63 in regular trading. Shares rose $2.37, or more than 2 percent, to $96.00 in after-hours trading on the news.

CPU Wars and c-Jump: the nerdiest card and board games ever

    c-Jump
Board games and card games are kind of dorky to begin with. And there are plenty of titles out there that hold a special place in the heart of the nerd (just ask one about Settlers of Catan). But, there is a line, a line which even the nerdiest amongst us might not care to cross. For example, c-Jump -- a board game that teaches the basics of programming. Some of the spaces you'll land on in the course of your journey down the mountain include "goto jump;" and "switch (x) {". Then there's CPU Wars, for the three people out there that think Magic: The Gathering is too mainstream. In this card battle game you pit CPUs from throughout history against each other and attempt to collect all your adversary's processors. You can order c-Jump through ThinkGeek for $25 and pledge cash to CPU Wars over at Kickstarter. You'll find a video of the card game after the break.
