DETROIT -- Wayne State University School of Medicine researchers, working with colleagues in Canada, have found that one or more substances produced by a type of immune cell in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) may play a role in the disease's progression. The finding could lead to new targeted therapies for MS treatment.

B cells, said Robert Lisak, M.D., professor of neurology at Wayne State and lead author of the study, are a subset of lymphocytes (a type of circulating white blood cell) that mature to become plasma cells and produce immunoglobulins, proteins that serve as antibodies. The B cells appear to have other functions, including helping to regulate other lymphocytes, particularly T cells, and helping maintain normal immune function when healthy.

In patients with MS, the B cells appear to attack the brain and spinal cord, possibly because there are substances produced in the nervous system and the meninges the covering of the brain and spinal cord that attract them. Once within the meninges or central nervous system, Lisak said, the activated B cells secrete one or more substances that do not seem to be immunoglobulins but that damage oligodendrocytes, the cells that produce a protective substance called myelin.

The B cells appear to be more active in patients with MS, which may explain why they produce these toxic substances and, in part, why they are attracted to the meninges and the nervous system.

The brain, for the most part, can be divided into gray and white areas. Neurons are located in the gray area, and the white parts are where neurons send their axons similar to electrical cables carrying messages to communicate with other neurons and bring messages from the brain to the muscles. The white parts of the brain are white because oligodendrocytes make myelin, a cholesterol-rich membrane that coats the axons. The myelin's function is to insulate the axons, akin to the plastic coating on an electrical cable. In addition, the myelin speeds communication along axons and makes that communication more reliable. When the myelin coating is attacked and degraded, impulses messages from the brain to other parts of the body can "leak" and be derailed from their target. Oligodendrocytes also seem to engage in other activities important to nerve cells and their axons.

The researchers took B cells from the blood of seven patients with relapsing-remitting MS and from four healthy patients. They grew the cells in a medium, and after removing the cells from the culture collected material produced by the cells. After adding the material produced by the B cells, including the cells that produce myelin, to the brain cells of animal models, the scientists found significantly more oligodendrocytes from the MS group died when compared to material produced by the B cells from the healthy control group. The team also found differences in other brain cells that interact with oligodendrocytes in the brain.

"We think this is a very significant finding, particularly for the damage to the cerebral cortex seen in patients with MS, because those areas seem to be damaged by material spreading into the brain from the meninges, which are rich in B cells adjacent to the areas of brain damage," Lisak said.

The team is now applying for grants from several sources to conduct further studies to identify the toxic factor or factors produced by B cells responsible for killing oligodendrocytes. Identification of the substance could lead to new therapeutic methods that could switch off the oligodendrocyte-killing capabilities of B cells, which, in turn, would help protect myelin from attacks.

The study, "Secretory products of multiple sclerosis B cells are cytotoxic to oligodendroglia in vitro," was published in the May 2012 edition of the Journal of Neuroimmunology and was recently featured in a National Multiple Sclerosis Society bulletin. Other WSU researchers involved in the study include Joyce Benjamins, Ph.D., professor and associate chair of neurology; Samia Ragheba, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurology and immunology & microbiology; Liljana Nedelkoskaa, research assistant in neurology; and Jennifer Barger, research assistant in neurology; as well as researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute and McGill University in Montreal. The research was supported by a National Multiple Sclerosis Society Collaborative MS Research Center Award, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

Judge clears Arizona late-term abortion ban

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A federal judge refused on Monday to block an Arizona law banning most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, saying it does not impose a "substantial obstacle" to the procedure, and cleared the way for the statute to take effect on Thursday.

The ruling marked a stinging legal defeat for abortion-rights advocates who cited the Arizona law as the most extreme example of late-term abortion prohibitions enacted in more than half a dozen states, and they vowed to immediately appeal the decision.

U.S. District Judge James Teilborg ruled that the measure, passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature and signed into law in April by Republican Governor Jan Brewer, was consistent with the standards that federal courts have set on limits to late-term abortions.

The statute was challenged this month by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights in a lawsuit believed to be the first court case of its kind against late-term abortion bans, attorneys for the plaintiffs said.

Under the Arizona law, physicians found in violation of the ban would face a misdemeanor criminal charge and possible suspension or revocation of their licenses.

Teilborg said Arizona's law "does not impose a substantial obstacle" to abortions generally and that Arizona had the right to enact such a measure.

The Arizona statute bars doctors from performing abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy except in the case of a medical emergency, a circumstance critics say is defined more narrowly than exemptions permitted by other states with similar laws.

The Arizona ban provides an exemption only in cases in which an "immediate" abortion is required to avert death or risk of "substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function."

Late-term bans elsewhere, by comparison, generally allow an abortion when the mother's life or health would otherwise be in jeopardy, abortion-rights advocates say.

The judge denied a request by the plaintiffs for a court injunction blocking the law's implementation and threw out the case on its merits.

The opponents of the law said they would file an emergency appeal with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco in a last-ditch bid to keep the ban from being implemented.

"This law forces a sick, pregnant woman to wait until she is on the brink of disaster before her doctor can provide her medically appropriate care," said Dan Pochoda, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union in Arizona.

Brewer said in a statement that she was pleased that the court ruling would allow "common sense restrictions" to be put on the state's books.

"I recognize that the issue of abortion remains a controversial one. With the Mother's Health and Safety Act, I'm hopeful most Arizonans can find common ground," she said.

The suit was thought to mark the first court test brought by physicians against similar abortion restrictions that have surfaced in a growing number of states since Republicans gained greater statehouse clout in the November 2010 elections, according to the ACLU and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Although late-term abortions remain relatively rare, six states have put laws into effect in the past two years banning them, based on hotly debated medical research suggesting that a fetus feels pain starting at 20 weeks of gestation. North Carolina enacted its own such ban decades ago.

Arizona and two other states - Georgia and Louisiana - have enacted similar bans that have not yet taken effect, the Center for Reproductive Rights said.

The U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973 but allowed states to place restrictions on the procedure from the time when a fetus could potentially survive outside the womb, except when a woman's health was at risk.

Aspartame and pregnancy is a subject of interest for many around the globe. Several question the security of artificial sweeteners applying this component. The following is a discourse dealing with a few key problems relating to this subject matter.

What is Aspartame?

The product is an artificial sweetener used as an option to sugar in several food and beverage products. These are typically essential substances specifically in fizzy drinks or sodas, and sweets like pastries and confectioneries. It serves as an ideal replacement to glucose because it's much sweeter and exemplifies the saying that less is more. One problem with it is plenty of people question its safety and use. This is true particularly for pregnant women, and facts lies in the controversy concerning the safety of low calorie sweeteners when pregnant.

What's the argument about?

The discussion concerning the safety of low calorie sweeteners dates back practically thirty years before.

Different statements relating to an aspartame condition review situations involving a selection of signs or symptoms and side effects. Many of the most prevalent signs or symptoms noted include severe headaches and migraines, queasiness, and faintness and disorientation.

It is these statements that form the foundation for the argument that its use might not be secure for pregnant ladies. Although this is the situation, world-wide reports confirm sweeteners using aspartame are safe for public consumption, expectant women included. Aspartame and pregnancy is fine so long as it doesn't lead to extreme weight gain for the mother-to-be.

Artificial non-nutritive sweeteners are available in different kinds and brand names.

The most famous varieties are available in unique tinted wrapping and are a staple in numerous dining places, diners, and coffee shops around the globe. The following are some examples of the reliable sweeteners with approval from different health and government groups and organizations.

Rebaudioside A is a very common variety normally used in carbonated liquids and bottled juices. Despite being one of many more recent alternatives, it has a 'generally accepted as safe' rating and is suited for use in different goods. The same is true for Sucralose, a non-caloric sweetener created from sugar. This sort has approval for greater use in food and beverage production. It's common not only in sodas, but also baked goods, chewing and bubble gum, coffee and tea, and assorted sauces.

Sucralose has hardly any effects on blood sugar levels and has no calories. Using it when pregnant is harmless simply because it doesn't have harmful effects on lactation either. It is the most frequent variety and is a "table-top sweetener" because of how prevalent it is.

The use of low calorie sweeteners is well researched. Scholarly and scientific research doesn't demonstrate any undesired side effects on the mother or developing child relevant to the use of these kinds of goods. These findings go against the statements against low calorie sweeteners during pregnancy.

Health Advantages

Research has shown such artificial, low calorie sweeteners don't pose health problems for older people, especially diabetics, expectant women, or consumers of diet and light products. Such components are ideal choices when used in moderation. It is usually advisable to consult with your medical professional or a nutritionist for any worries relating to aspartame and pregnancy. This is actually the best way to handle use and settle any lingering questions regarding its safety.

Bayer earnings down on litigation set-asides

BERLIN (AP) ? Bayer AG says its second-quarter earnings were a third lower than last year because of one-time charges that included money set aside to deal with litigation linked to a contraceptive, but its revenues rose 10 percent and the company raised its full-year outlook.

The pharmaceutical and chemical company on Tuesday reported net earnings of ?494 million ($606 million) for April-June ? down from ?747 million a year earlier. Revenues climbed to ?10.18 billion from ?9.25 billion.

Earnings were weighed down by special items totaling ?762 million. That included ?496 million in risk provisions for "all litigations in connection with the oral contraceptive Yasmin/YAZ of which Bayer is currently aware and which it considers to be worthy of settlement."

Bayer says it is raising its full-year revenue and pre-tax earnings guidance.

SkyBridge eyeing China's hedge fund potential

SkyBridge Capital is eyeing the potential of China's burgeoning hedge fund industry, with tentative plans to?open a Hong Kong office which would serve as a gateway to the sector. ?

The US-based fund of hedge funds firm plans to open a Singapore office by the first quarter of 2013, with the launch of a $250-$500 million Asia-focused fund by the end of next year, according to SkyBridge founder and managing partner Anthony Scaramucci.

A Hong Kong office may follow in 2014, he adds during a visit to the city last week. ?Hong Kong is a great gateway into Greater China and to the economy in China,? he says. ?The Chinese government has signalled that they want to welcome hedge fund investors into their market so we certainly want to be a participant in that.?

Scaramucci believes the government?s industry blessing is a key step towards its success. ?It?s a huge sign of confidence,? he says. ?While there?ll be a short-term struggle, say five years out, I think there?ll be a very mature, very healthy hedge fund industry in China."

With the economic advancement of China, and Southeast Asia, the region ?has the opportunity to be the fastest-growing area of a slow-growing world?, says Scaramucci.

?If you?re a capital allocator and you want to get a healthy return for your clients, then you?re going to have to put capital in this area of the world.?

In terms of Asian clients, however, the region currently accounts for a small proportion of the firm?s global investor base. SkyBridge plans to grow its Asian clientele by establishing a presence in Asia and partnering local banks.

?Ideally I?d like to create some joint-venture relationships with some of the Asian private banks, whether in Singapore or other parts of Asia,? says Scaramucci. In Asia ?we do not have the formal distribution [channels] that we have in North America and in Europe?.

SkyBridge manages about $6.4 billion and has 55 staff across offices in New York and Zurich. The firm?s expansion into Asia will be marked by its inaugural SkyBridge Alternatives (Salt) Singapore conference, scheduled for October. ?

Modelled after the firm?s annual Salt event in Las Vegas, which drew 2,200 people in May, it is expected to be one of the biggest hedge fund conferences in Asia, with 400 to 600 people anticipated. ??If we have 500 people at the event, I?ll call it a really good success,? Scaramucci says.

The speaker list ranges from former British prime minister Tony Blair to economist Nouriel Roubini and former ?Junk Bond King? Michael Milken. The idea is to appeal to a delegate list that will be weighted towards the investor community.

SkyBridge is no stranger to Asia-Pacific, having established a partnership with Australian investment manager Challenger in early 2008. The two firms had planned a global hedge fund seeding platform, but it was shelved after the Wall Street crash in late 2008 severely impacted the hedge fund sector.

?The seeding business that we set up was victimised by the global financial crisis, so we?ve withdrawn the capital from that seeding business and we returned that capital to investors, including Challenger,? says Scaramucci.

The Australian group retains an 8% stake in SkyBridge and is still an investor in its FoHF products. ?They?ve been a great business partner for us,? says Scaramucci. ?They?ve helped us make inroads with some of the superannuation funds in Australia.?

While SkyBridge is seeking more ways to draw on its partnership with Challenger, the re-launch of a seeding platform is not on the cards at the moment. ?[With] the competitive dynamics being what they are, I?m not going to rush to push out seeding products,? he notes.

Pakistan to push for intelligence sharing at U.S. talks

DUBAI (Reuters) - Pakistan's spy chief will call for an end to U.S. military drone strikes in its tribal areas bordering Afghanistan and push for a sharing of technology and intelligence during a visit to Washington this week, the country's interior minister said on Monday.

But indications are that Islamabad's demands for a halt to drone attacks may receive a less-than-sympathetic hearing from top Obama administration officials.

Pakistani Lieutenant-General Zaheer ul-Islam's visit to meet CIA director General David Petraeus will be his first since he became head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in March and follows a thaw in relations between Pakistan and the United States.

Pakistan, however, continues to insist that U.S. drone strikes -- which it says are a breach of its territorial sovereignty -- must end.

"We will push for no drones. If we (Pakistan and the U.S.) are partners, we should sit together and have a common strategy. However, in this regional war there has been no common strategy against a common enemy," Interior Minister Rehman Malik told a news conference in Dubai.

"I hope the visit of the director of the ISI will have good results. There is some dialogue going on as we speak," he said.

The United States has given no sign it is willing to halt the drone strikes.

In fact, U.S. officials signal there will be little, if any, change in U.S. counter-terrorism activity in Pakistan and the region.

"Let's not lose sight of the issue here. Al-Qaeda and its militant allies are violating Pakistan's sovereignty by using its territory to plot and carry out attacks," a U.S. official said. "Aggressive counterterrorism operations are what's frustrating al-Qaeda and pushing their leadership to the brink."

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also reiterated U.S. concerns about the extent of Pakistan efforts to confront militants -- including the Haqqani network and the Pakistani Taliban, known as the TTP -- in loosely-governed tribal areas along the country's mountainous border with Afghanistan.

"Everyone wants the Pakistanis to accept more responsibility for taking on al-Qaeda, TTP and the Haqqanis. The problem is they have yet to show the capability -- or willingness -- to take effective action" in Pakistan's tribal areas, said the U.S. official.

The official added that while there was "always room for dialogue on how to defeat terrorist entities in the region," Pakistani authorities "need to offer some concrete ideas on how it does more against the violent Haqqanis, rather than point fingers."

But Pakistan's Malik told journalists: "Both countries have to find a midway (pont) ... This of course means intelligence-sharing. Also, give us the technology and we will use it. The U.S. has given us F-16 (fighter jets). Are we misusing it?"

Malik gave no further details, but Pakistan has long asked the United States to provide its military with its own drones for use in its tribal areas.

National balloon championship won in East Texas

A national champion earned his title in the final day of the Great Texas Balloon Race in East Texas. Four days of national competition came down to the final flight, and a chance to represent the United States in the world championships. It was a dash to the finish as pilots racked up final points at East Texas Regional Airport, in what organizers say was the most successful race in the events history.

"I'm confident that we set records in attendance we have the greatest board the greatest group of volunteers. We're dealing with the best of the best with the pilots that we have , and so the two blended very well. Its just spectacular to watch," says race chairman Frankie Parson-Riggins.

A record was set with 9 overall ringers on the center pole, and again pilots scoring was dead on target.

"You had to do really well, I was under a meter on the task yesterday and that was good for 19th place," says pilot Chase Donner.

The 25 year old Donner was high scorer and earned a national championship.

"Its a great honor there's such a quality field here and its a very well run," Donner says.

The top three qualify for the world championships in Brazil in 2014.? East Texas will host the next two nationals. While Chase Donner won the national overall championship, pilot Brooke Owen took first place overall in the Great Texas balloon race.

? Eye / Vision Problems ? ? Genetics ? Jul 30, 2012

Researchers from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia, Loyola University Chicago Health Sciences Division and their collaborators have isolated an elusive human gene that causes a common form of Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a relatively rare but devastating form of early-onset blindness. The new LCA gene is called NMNAT1. Finding the specific gene mutated in patients with LCA is the first step towards developing sight-saving gene therapy.

LCA is an inherited retinal degenerative disease characterized by reduced vision in infancy. Within the first few months of life, parents usually notice a lack of visual responsiveness and unusual roving eye movements known as nystagmus. LCA typically involves only vision problems, but can be accompanied by disease in other organ systems in a minority of patients. LCA is a common reason children are enrolled in schools for the blind.

?The immediate benefit of this discovery is that affected patients with mutations in this new LCA gene now know the cause of their condition,? said Eric Pierce, M.D., Ph.D., co-senior author and director of the Ocular Genomics Institute at Mass. Eye and Ear. ?Scientists now have another piece to the puzzle as to why some children are born with LCA and decreased vision. The long-term goal of our research is to develop therapies to limit or prevent vision loss from these disorders.?

NMNAT1 is the 18th identified LCA gene. The gene resides in a region that was known to harbor an LCA gene since 2003, but the specific disease gene has been undiscovered until now. These findings will be published on July 29 in the online edition of Nature Genetics.

To identify NMNAT1, scientists performed whole exome sequencing of the family of two siblings who initially presented for evaluation of LCA but who had no mutations in any of the known LCA genes. Being seen by a multi-disciplinary team that took the case from careful clinical characterization to genetic testing to the research laboratory was an essential ingredient for success.

?By using whole exome sequencing, we found a mutation in a gene that no one could have predicted would be associated with LCA,? said Dr. Pierce.

?Whereas most of the known LCA genes involve dysfunction of retinal ciliary proteins necessary for light detection in the eye, NMNAT1 is uniquely distinguished by being the first metabolic enzyme linked to LCA,? said Marni J. Falk, M.D., co-first author and Clinical Geneticist at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Having found a mutation in NMNAT1 in this one family, the investigators next asked if mutations in NMNAT1 also cause disease in other patients with LCA. Screening of 284 unrelated patients with LCA from the United States, England, France and India allowed them to identify 13 other patients with mutations in NMNAT1 as the cause of their disease.

Drs. Falk, Pierce and colleagues also studied how the identified mutations in NMNAT1 affect the function of the NMNAT1 protein, and thus may cause dysfunction and death of the light sensitive photoreceptor cells in the retina. Working together with Eiko Nakamaru-Ogiso, Ph.D., in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at The University of Pennsylvania, they found that mutations in NMNAT1 appear to decrease the ability of the NMNAT1 protein to produce NAD+, a key mediator of cellular signaling and energetics.

Early treatment for patients with NMNAT1-related LCA could be especially beneficial.

Researchers found that all but the youngest patient with NMNAT1 mutations had damage to the macula, the center of the retina that is needed for central vision. ?This 4-year-old girl who doesn?t have central vision loss yet can possibly benefit substantially if we can devise a therapy for her NMNAT1-mediated LCA that prevents her from developing severe central vision loss,? Dr. Pierce said.

This study is an example of the multidisciplinary collaboration among the three institutions, using exome sequencing to discover genes involved in inherited diseases caused by mutations of a single gene. ?With the robust database and pipeline that we have developed, we have analyzed more than 300 whole exomes of patients and families with single-gene diseases,? said Dr. Xiaowu Gai, co-senior author and director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. ?We are following up on a number of strong candidate genes. We are sequencing many new samples and expect similar exciting discoveries for other diseases.?

N.Korea warns of more rain after deadly floods

North Korea warned that more rainstorms will hit the country's north and western coastal regions this week, after recent flooding killed 88 people and left tens of thousands homeless.

Heavy rains are expected in most parts of the country on Sunday and Monday, state-run KCNA said, particularly warning of downpours set to deluge the west coast and the northern province of Jagang.

"In the period there will be rainfalls of 100-150 millimetres (5.9 inches) or more than 200 millimetres in some areas," KCNA said, citing a forecast by the country's weather service.

The warning comes a day after the North said that deadly floods which started on July 18 had left 88 dead, injured 134, made almost 63,000 people homeless and destroyed swathes of farmland.

More than 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) of crop fields were "washed away" or submerged, with roads and factories destroyed, KCNA said Saturday, in a blow for the state which has long been beset by persistent severe food shortages.

After decades of deforestation the impoverished North is particularly vulnerable to flooding.

Dozens were killed or injured by a storm and torrential rains in June and July last year, which left thousands homeless and large areas of farmland flooded.

With rugged terrain and outmoded agricultural practices, the communist state faces serious difficulties in feeding its 24 million people. Hundreds of thousands died during a famine in the mid to late 1990s.

Following a visit to the country, UN agencies estimated last November that three million people would need food aid in 2012.

The United States reached a deal in February this year to offer the North much-needed food in return for a freeze on nuclear and missile tests.

But the plan was scrapped after Pyongyang's failed rocket launch in April, seen by the US and its allies as an attempted ballistic missile test banned under UN resolutions.

Rock & Roll Photography by Ron Pownall to Appear at Kaminski ...

Posted by admin on July 28, 2012 in Uncategorized | Short Link

Beverly, Massachusetts (PRWEB) July 25, 2012

Kaminski Auctions is pleased to announce that it will feature five works by Rock & Roll Photographer Ron Pownall in its upcoming 20th Century Decorative Arts sale, this Saturday July 28th.

Although currently based out of Somerville, Massachusetts, Pownall began his career as a staff photographer for the Chicago Tribune. His first three assignments were Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. He even photographed the 1968 rioting at the Chicago Democratic Convention. When Pownall moved to Boston, he became the New England assignment photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine. He worked for other magazines, as well as for Columbia, Epic, WEA and Capitol records companies. Aerosmith, Boston, The Cars, Meatloaf, J Geils Band, Queen and Liza Minelli, were among his band clients.

Kaminski Auctions will offer five of Ron Pownalls photographs: Ted Nugent at The Meadowlands, Rutherford, NJ, circa 1978 (estimated $ 1,600-$ 2,200), Bruce Springsteen at The Worcester Centrum, MA, circa 1984 (estimated $ 4,000-$ 6,000), Freddie Mercury at The Nassau County Coliseum, NY, circa 1977 (estimated $ 1,600-$ 2,200), Stephen Tyler in Tulsa, Oklahoma, circa 1978 (estimated $ 1,600-$ 2,000) and Elton John (estimated $ 1,600-$ 2,200) will be for sale.

The image of Elton John was taken on August 18, 1976 at The Sherry-Netherland Hotel in New York City. Taken using Kodachrome 64 film and on a Nikon F2 w/ 35mm f1.4 Nikkor lens, the photograph is printed on Fuji archival photographic paper and mounted in archival mat. The narrative included by the artist reads: The shot was for Rolling Stone Magazine, during the absolute pinnacle of Eltons popularity and his record-setting 7 sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. However, he was resisting all interviewseven for Rolling Stone! Because I was working with his L.A. publicist (who also handles Queen), I thought for sure I could get throughbut nothing. (I was shooting all the shows at MSGarden at night, but the private, daytime interview was elusive.) I was camped-out with friends in Manhattan for a weekbut finally, a breakthrough. Elton was a captive in his hotel. He was in The Elizabeth Taylor Suite, at the Sherry-Netherland Hotel on Fifth Avenue. Fans were jamming the lobby and on the street below his window. It was fan craziness at its wildest. He couldnt leave. (He did sneak-out the service elevator once in a laundry cart). In any case, the Stone writer, Cliff Jahr, and I, had a t-shirt made which said Prisoner in NY and sent it to the hotel. The next morning I got a call that Mr. John would like to meet you at 2. Cliff and I were there promptly at 2, and interviewed and photod until 4just the three of us for over two hours. The shot was meant to show, with so much hustle and bustle of Fifth Ave below, that Elton was still a prisoner in his castle. And, as we were taking the window shows, fans from the sidewalk, 14 floors below, were screaming up each time he leaned out the window. He was a delightful chap to shootquiet offstage, but absolutely energized when the lights hit the stage.

Several years ago, Ron Pownall pulled his images from all publications and television licensing. He felt they were too important, especially to those collectors who value fine music photography. The enlargements are available only to collectors on a one-print-at-a-time basis, and are printed on Fuji archival photo paper and matted with 8-ply museum-quality matte board. They are signed, have an Embossing Seal and a Certificate of Authenticity, which has details of the photo.

Kaminski Auctions is excited to offer such exclusive, limited edition, collectible photographs this Saturday. Bidding will commence at 10:00 AM at the Kaminski Auctions gallery, located at 117 Elliot Street, Route 62, Beverly, Massachusetts. Israel Out at Corazon - - Portland Food and Drink

Chris Israel?s Corazon Mexican restaurant collaboration with investment group ChefStable has been struggling since they opened the doors. I like the space, which is at SW 12th and Washington St., but from the opening the food was a bit expensive, not that great, the drinks were inconsistent, and the menu wasn?t approachable enough for the size of crowd they are going to need to pay the bills. A few months after opening, they retooled the menu, dropping drink prices and removing some of the more esoteric dishes, and, unfortunately, somewhat Americanizing the food.

Now, According to PortlandMonthly, Chris Israel is no longer involved:

?Even with a scaled back menu, I took it too personally, trying to honor my background. I didn?t want to be remembered as a taqueria. It?s hard to find good cooks; there?s a shortage of talent right now. Everyone thinks Mexican food is easy, but it?s not.?

Instead, ex Tabla chef Anthony Cafiero has been brought in as a consultant, simplifying the menu yet again, and steering it more towards small sharing plates. Corazon is still using the house-made masa, but gone are the oyster shooters, seafood cocktails, enchiladas, chiles rellenos and carnitas. Small plates are good choices in many restaurant situations, because at casual glance the menu can seem inexpensive, but the prices add up quickly and guests frequently end up paying more than they would for regular sized plates.

These days, with a few companies financing many restaurants, the pressure is on for them to turn a profit from the start, rather than taking a little time to tweak things and to build an audience. It reminds me of the new television season, where they have to grab an audience right away, or they are canceled after three episodes. I find it hard to believe that with the right menu and kitchen staff a good Mexican restaurant couldn?t thrive downtown ? something along the lines of Autentica, Mextiza, Mi Mero Mole or Nuestra Cocina. We already have enough Cha Cha Cha type restaurants.

I wish they had given Chris a bit more time, but hopefully he will be able to open a less ambitious, smaller restaurant where the pressure will be less, and he can work to see his vision come to fruition. I get the feeling his heart wasn?t in this venture from the beginning.

Modington Lets You Shop For Outfits, Not Just Clothes

modington-logoPranav Dharma, a former IBM engineer, self-described "fashionable" geek, and founder of new women's apparel startup Modington, thinks that today's online e-commerce sites don't reflect how women really shop for clothes and accessories. So he decided to create one. Enter, Modington. "I was inspired by observing how my wife shops," says Dharma, "she would get a dress, then started hunting for accessories. I thought there's room for improvement there [with online shopping], because the current websites don't seem to capture this natural manner in which women tend to shop," he explains.

Volvo to demonstrate green efficiency at IAA 2012

Since serial production commenced in 2010, Volvo Buses has sold more than 760 hybrid buses to 20 countries. The company is thus the leading supplier of hybrid buses in Europe.

Sales successes are due to the hybrid?s excellent energy efficiency and environmental properties: the Volvo 7900 Hybrid has approximately 37% lower fuel consumption and climate impact than a corresponding diesel option and only half the amount of emissions of nitrogen oxides and particles. The hybrid also maintains the same quality as Volvo?s diesel buses in terms of operational reliability and availability.

The body of the Volvo 7900 Hybrid is built largely of aluminium and fiberglass, which entails low weight and thus also low fuel consumption and the possibility to carry more passengers. Volvo?s hybrid buses are equipped with a smaller diesel engine and an electric motor. The energy generated when the brakes are applied is utilized, which means that fuel consumption is radically reduced. At bus stops, the diesel engine switches off and the bus operates quietly and completely exhaust-free on electricity.

(AP) ? It's difficult enough to beat the U.S. women's gymnastics team these days. Now, the rest of the world will have to try and do it after the Americans are given a head start.

The reigning world champions and heavy gold-medal favorites will begin Sunday's team qualification on vault, their strongest event, where a busted big toe won't keep McKayla Maroney from doing her thing.

The 16-year-old will anchor the U.S. on their signature event despite aggravating a toe injury in practice during the run-up to the games.

"Vault is what I'm here for," Maroney said. "I knew I was going to do vault no matter what."

And nobody in the world does the difficult Amanar better than the dynamo from Long Beach, Calif., who rocketed to a world title in Tokyo last fall while helping the U.S. win the championship by a whopping four points.

The same is expected in London, where the U.S. will attempt to capture Olympic gold for the first time since the "Magnificent Seven" triumphed in Atlanta 16 years ago.

World all-around champion Jordyn Wieber, trials winner Gabby Douglas and team captain Aly Raisman will do all four events for the U.S., with Kyla Ross replacing Maroney on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

By the time Maroney's day is over, the U.S. could have a pretty healthy lead. Vault produces the highest scores in competition, and no other country can match the U.S. Amanar for Amanar.

The vault ? named after 1996 vault champion Simona Amanar ? is arguably the most difficult being done in competition and is worth an extra 0.7 just for even attempting it. If the U.S. gets them off cleanly, they'll put the rest of the 12-team field in a hole that will be tough to overcome.

As if sending a message of their dominance, the U.S. ripped off a series of Amanars during podium training, resembling a pink-clad assembly line.

Barring catastrophe akin to a reverse "Miracle On Ice," the U.S. will be one of the eight teams to advance to Tuesday night's finals.

Each team enters four athletes per event during qualifying, with the three best scores counting.

The top eight teams at the end of the night make the finals on Tuesday, which moves to the "three-up, three-count" format.

The stiffest test for the U.S. is expected to come from defending Olympic champion China, Russia and a resurgent Romanian squad that won the European championships handily this spring.

Still, there's little doubt the U.S. is the team to catch, particularly with Maroney in the lineup.

Eyebrows were raised just before the games when she was held out for much of training, spending time behind a small protective wall with her feet hidden from view.

Turns out she'd accidentally kicked a beam during practice shortly after the U.S. arrived in London, causing her big toe, which she broke at a competition in Chicago in May, to start throbbing again.

The only real treatment is time off. She won't get any until after the games and will grit her way through the vault with her big toe and second toe taped together.

After she's done with her two trips down the runway, Maroney will get a close-up view of the budding rivalry between Wieber and Douglas.

Wieber has steamrolled the competition for the past three years but was upended by the sprightly Douglas at trials. Both have stressed they're focused on the team gold, but the qualification round will mark the start of what could be a gripping week in which the U.S. tries to repeat the 1-2 all-around finish produced four years ago by Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson.

If Douglas or Wieber falters, Raisman is more than capable of bumping one out of the all-around. The top 24 individual finishers move on to the finals Thursday, but Olympic rules allow only two athletes from any country to advance, meaning at least one of the three Americans will watch from the stands in a sweatsuit.

It's that kind of depth that has made the U.S. a prohibitive favorite. Wieber, Douglas, Maroney and Raisman were all part of the world championship team that crushed the field in Tokyo. The 15-year-old Ross has fit right in, her elegant lines a marked contrast in style to some of her more muscled teammates.

Ross has hardly been intimidated by the stage, soaring at trials last month to finish second on bars behind Douglas. She was sharp in training on Friday, earning praise from team coordinator Martha Karolyi after a series of no-wobble beam routines.

A repeat performance Sunday should set the stage for the biggest night in U.S. gymnastics this millennium.
