Google agrees to court order in India to remove content

Google has agreed before a court in Delhi to remove religious and other content considered objectionable, though some other Internet firms are likely to appeal the court's decision, plaintiff Mufti Ajiaz Arshad Qasmi said on Monday.

Qasmi, a private citizen, had filed a civil suit against Google and other Internet companies including Facebook, objecting to certain content on their websites. The content is said?to mock gods worshipped in India. He is now pressing the companies to put in place technology for filtering out content that is considered objectionable.

"This step is in accordance with Google's long-standing policy of responding to court orders," a Google spokeswoman in India said.

India has been sensitive to certain political and religious content on websites, and the country's minister for communications, Kapil Sibal, said in December that Internet companies should evolve a mechanism to remove objectionable content immediately after it is put up.

Google told the court of civil judge Praveen Singh that it had already removed some of the objectionable content, and promised to remove the remaining content pointed out by Qasmi in the 15 days given to it and other Internet companies to take down the content, Qasmi said.

In a separate criminal suit filed in Delhi by a newspaper editor, Vinay Rai, against objectionable content on websites of 21 Internet companies including Google and Facebook, Google India has argued that it is not responsible for third-party content, and in any case the sites are not owned and operated by Google India but its parent company, Google Inc.

The government allowed the court to prosecute the Internet companies under various Indian laws in the criminal case, but Google has meanwhile appealed the decision before the Delhi High Court.

"They are saying a different thing before each court," Rai said on Monday. "In the civil matter they have agreed to remove the content, which they had refused to remove in the criminal court."

The criminal case, however, holds Google responsible for the third-party content, and also named its officials as liable, said a person close to the situation, who declined to be named. The civil case is entirely about removal of certain content, the person added.

Google said last month it was directing users to localized country domains on Blogger to provide it flexibility to comply with content removal rules in various countries. Twitter also decided last month to withhold certain content from users in a specific country, when required by local laws, while keeping it available to the rest of the world.

Self-Awareness, Self-Improvement and Self-Empowerment - blog*spot

by bgflickr2

It says regarding Noah that he brought the animals to the ark in couples. But there are things which come in triples, like Self-Awareness, Self-Improvement and Self-Empowerment. The three go hand in hand (sort of a couple). The longer you tread the correct path, these 3 can unite and become ONE.
No wonder all these three concepts begin with SELF. No-one will tread the trail for you. You are accountable to doing "the work", to tread the triple path.
These are "smart news". There

Mother of slain actress settles suit with Spector

(AP) ? A lawyer says the mother of the actress Phil Spector was convicted of killing has settled her wrongful death suit against the legendary music producer.

Attorney John Taylor tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/yXWf34 ) the terms of Friday's settlement were confidential, but says his client, Donna Clarkson, is pleased and relieved the suit is over.

Lana Clarkson was shot and killed in the foyer of Spector's Alhambra mansion nine years ago.

Donna Clarkson attended the 2009 trial daily, and testified that her daughter was upbeat and not at all suicidal, as Spector's defense alleged.

Spector was convicted in the death and is serving a 19 years-to-life sentence.

Taylor says he signed off on the settlement.

Euro zone loses patience with Greece (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Euro zone finance ministers told Greece on Saturday it could not go ahead with an agreed deal to restructure privately-held debt until it guaranteed it would implement reforms needed to secure a second financing package from the euro zone and the IMF.

Euro zone ministers had hoped to meet on Monday to finalize the second Greek bailout, which has to be in place by mid-March if Athens is to avoid a chaotic default. But the meeting was postponed because of Greek reluctance to commit to reforms.

Instead, the ministers held a conference call on Saturday to take stock of progress on the second financing package, which euro zone leaders set at 130 billion euros back in October.

"There was a very clear message that was conveyed from all participants of the teleconference ... to the Greeks that enough is enough," one euro zone official said. "There is a great sense of frustration that they are dragging their feet.

"They should get their act together and start talking honestly, decisively and speedily with the Troika on the aspects of the programme that remain to be finalized - on fiscal and labor market reforms," the official said.

The Troika are the representatives of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, who have prepared a Greek debt sustainability analysis on which the second financing programme will be based.

"The main issue is the lack of reform, or prior action, in Greece," a second euro zone official said.

Euro zone ministers were also dissatisfied with Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos because they believed the minister was paying more attention to his position within his party ahead of the April elections, than to talks about reforms.

"There is a great sense of frustration with Minister Venizelos, who is very hard to get hold of because he is very busy campaigning for the leadership of (the Greek party) PASOK, so he is not available to meet with Troika members," the first official said.

"He is preparing his own political future, rather than the future of his country. People are seriously disgruntled about that and have conveyed this very clearly to him this afternoon," the official said.

"There is an increasing sense of frustration that why should we honour our part of the bargain, which we have in the past, while Greece does not seem to care that much, and has not delivered their part of the bargain," the official said.

ATHENS ADMITS TO TOUGH TALKS

In Athens, Venizelos admitted to a growing sense of impatience with the Greeks.

"There is great impatience and great pressure not only from the three institutions that make up the troika but also from euro zone member states," Venizelos said after what he called a "very difficult" conference call with euro zone counterparts.

"The moment is very crucial. Everything should be concluded by tomorrow night."

Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the Eurogroup of euro zone finance ministers, voiced the possibility of default.

"If we were to establish that everything has gone wrong in Greece, there would be no new programme, and that would mean that in March they have to declare bankruptcy," he said in advance copy of comments to news weekly Der Spiegel.

Greece has secured a debt restructuring deal with private creditors to halve the value of Greek debt in nominal terms and in exchange receive new, 30 year bonds with an average coupon below 4 percent, officials said.

The restructuring is to help make Greek debt sustainable by cutting it to 120 percent of GDP in 2020 from 160 percent now.

But euro zone governments will only agree to bolster the debt restructuring, called private sector involvement (PSI), with 30 billion euros and further finance the Greek government through 2014 if Athens presses on with lagging reforms.

"The message to Greece now is very clear. The PSI as it stands now is broadly OK but we will not allow you to go ahead with the PSI unless we have guarantees that the rest of the reform to make the whole situation sustainable in the long run will be delivered," the first official said.

"We don't want to give them the PSI, because once we do, we surrender our leverage to obtain any more concrete commitments in terms of policy," the official said. "Before we go ahead with the PSI ... we want to have assurances that Greece is actually capable of implementing the second programme."

Debt restructuring is likely to hit Greek banks harder than others, because they hold a lot of Greek government bonds.

Some EU officials said on Friday that euro zone governments may now have to contribute closer to 145 billion euros than the originally envisaged 130 billion to the second financing package to help recapitalise Greek banks after the bond swap.

But there is strong resistance to that idea from several countries, including paymaster Germany.

"It is highly unlikely that the overall envelope will increase," the second official said.

"In some capitals there is absolutely no appetite whatsoever to reopen the size of the financing package," the first official said.

WHO PAYS?

Investors and some EU officials have suggested that any additional money needed to make Greek debt sustainable could come from the ECB, which holds a portfolio of around 40-50 billion euros worth of Greek paper.

The issue was not discussed at the Saturday call, however.

"This is off the table now. Everybody is saying now that before we can start discussing what the public sector can do, should do or may do, let's talk to the Greeks about what they are prepared to do," the first official said.

"If the Greeks don't start delivering, the question of Official Sector Involvement (OSI) is superfluous."

International lenders to Greece would like to see a lower minimum wage, the removal of the 13th and 14th month "bonus" salary and the liberalisation of labor markets - issues that are politically difficult for Greek parties before the April elections.

"We hope that over the next 12-24-48 hours they will get their act together and ... discuss these matters very urgently with the Troika," the first official said.

Euro zone officials said that Greece, betting that the euro zone would not allow a disorderly default because of the possible repercussions across the 17-country single currency bloc, was playing a dangerous game.

"They think, that we think that the unthinkable cannot be thought. But they better think again," the first official said.

The euro zone expects Greek politicians to come up with a consensus on reforms by Monday, but a letter committing to reforms from political parties may not be enough at this stage, the official said.

"We don't care so much about signed letters by now, we want a clear timetable for legislative action, we would expect them to put it in legislation and pass it possibly before the end of February or in early March - that is the best guarantee - better than any signature," the first official said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? With the Super Bowl days away, federal authorities announced a crackdown Thursday on websites that stream unauthorized broadcasts of sports events just hours after New England quarterback Tom Brady told reporters in Indianapolis that he watched last year's game on an illegal site.

Investigators seized 16 sites and brought criminal charges against a Michigan man who controlled nine of them.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara warned sports fans in a release that piracy costs sports leagues and broadcasters millions of dollars, forcing increases in ticket prices and other costs to consumers.

His message came soon after Brady casually mentioned his own use of illegal websites during a news conference staged in preparation for the Super Bowl on Sunday between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

"Last year I was rehabbing my foot in Costa Rica, watching the game on an illegal Super Bowl website. And now I'm actually playing in the game. So, it's pretty cool," Brady said.

Web operator Yonjo Quiroa, of Comstock Park, Mich., was charged Wednesday with copyright infringement. Prosecutors said he distributed football, basketball and hockey games and wrestling matches.

Quiroa appeared in federal court in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Wednesday. He was held without bail while his immigration status was under review. Larry Phelan, his lawyer, declined to comment.

In court papers, authorities said Quiroa registered nine of the 16 seized domain names in 2010 and 2011 before operating the websites out of his home, collecting profits of at least $13,000 from online merchants who paid him to advertise on the sites.

Authorities said the prosecution was part of a continuing federal effort to target counterfeiting and piracy on the Internet.

Also in Indianapolis, federal authorities said they seized nearly $5 million worth of phony Super Bowl sportswear and merchandise in a nationwide sweep that was the result of a four-month investigation.

Officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection said agents targeted stores, flea markets and street vendors that allegedly sold counterfeit game-related sportswear. Fake jerseys, ball caps, T-shirts, jackets and other souvenirs were among the 42,000 items confiscated in Operation Fake Sweep.

Authorities put the total take at more than $4.8 million, up from $3.7 million last year.

Also seized were counterfeit Major League Baseball, NBA and NHL items worth about $1.6 million.

Fool Proof Your Taxes | Financial Newsline

April is just around the corner, and that means people are literally screaming for tax relief. However, there is one type of relief you can get without having to call the IRS or your accountant. The government reports that almost 8 percent of all tax returns contain simple errors that delay a refund or cause taxpayers to file a late return. A few of the errors that can kick a return out of the system, and back to you for correction, are things like a missing signature, wrong filing status, incorrect number of dependents, and many others. Most often, the IRS says, these mistakes involve blank spaces on a return, where there should be an entry. To prevent this situation, and obtain tax relief, make sure to have someone double-check your return before you send it in. If you are uncomfortable having anyone else look at the return, make a list of items based on this article and do the checking yourself.

Don?t forget, you can always go to an IRS office in your locality and ask for help filling out the return. This might take some time, but if you really want to cover all the bases, and get tax relief, then it is a wise thing to do. Typical errors, besides those mentioned above, include the omission of a decimal place in an important income box, wrong address on the envelope, wrong social security number for you or your spouse, and missing pages.

These mistakes do not mean you are trying to cheat or defraud the government. Simple errors are human, and the IRS understands that. But why court attention from the Internal Revenue Service? To get tax relief, and avoid a delay in your refund, make sure to avoid simple errors.

In order to get tax relief, be certain that you have signed your return and used the proper postage, along with the correct IRS mailing address on the envelope. If you e-file, you will still need to electronically sign your form. If mailing a hard-copy return, you will also want to put your return address on the envelope.

As for the return itself, tax relief is just around the corner if you double-check that you have avoided mistakes which the IRS says are most common. Therefore, make sure to indicate the proper filing status. If you are married, do not mark the ?single? box. The IRS has extremely clear directions for what category is appropriate. In addition, the IRS often sees returns that have incorrect dependent listings. Husbands and wives may not claim each other. It sounds ridiculous, but literally thousands of tax returns each year show up at government offices with spouses claiming each other as dependents. Read the IRS guidelines on dependents in order to understand this concept more fully. Lastly, put your correct social security number on the form. This is the first thing the IRS looks at on a tax return. Tax relief is easy if you follow these simple rules.

3 Technology Tools to Supercharge Your Business Networking ...

Effective contact management lies at the core of every professional?s success. Turning strangers into friends and then into advocates is a

Tech Guru Kevin Michael

Tech Guru Kevin Michael

foundational skill for creating opportunity for yourself and your organization. Here are a few tools that I suggest to simplify the process of collecting, organizing and leveraging your contacts.

LinkedIn

In the world of social networking sites for business professionals,?LinkedIn is the 800-pound gorilla. Based on the principle of?six degrees of separation, the site allows you to create a professional identity (skills, work experience, etc.), connect with professionals you know and trust, and provides you the social data that you?ll need to connect with others. Personally, I?ve used LinkedIn to find prospects, identify partners, market my company and reach out successfully to complete strangers. I could spend hours explaining how to use LinkedIn to your advantage, but I?ll leave that to the marketing pros. Just take a moment, register and make LinkedIn a cornerstone of your relationship development strategy. Trust me, it will be worth your while.

CardMunch

It?s pretty safe to say that we all enjoy meeting new people and collecting business cards, but hate the process of entering business card information into our contact systems. In comes CardMunch. This nifty iPhone application allows you to snap a picture of a business card, submit it to the CardMunch system and voila! In less than 5 minutes you?ll have the complete contact data sent back to the app for you to save to your phone, send a follow up email and even connect with that contact on LinkedIn. It really helps you skip the the tedium and get down to what matters; fostering connections. In lieu of an iPhone, Android users can get similar functionality with Google Googles or can wait until the Android version of CardMunch launches. For folks on other platforms, I would recommend the Shoeboxed service. It?s not free or quite as immediate, but it does the trick and a whole lot more.

LetterMeLater

I came across this service after the unceremonious demise of my previous favorite, DeferredSender. LetterMeLater allows you to schedule an email to be sent at a future date and time. This comes in handy for following up promptly with contacts and avoiding being labeled a vampire when you send out that 3am email. The service is great because it works for any email client and for any whimsical purpose you can find. I would caution you to avoid sending sensitive data using the service (but that really applies to email in general) since the email is stored on LetterMeLater?s servers until it is delivered. Another great option for anyone using Gmail or Google Apps, is a helpful Chrome/Firefox web browser extension called Boomerang.

There you have it; 3 more tools to add to your business networking arsenal. Feel free to let me know what you think once you?ve had a chance to try them out by contacting me at kmichael [at] invizio [dot] com.

Leslie Carter Cause of Death Was Drug Overdose, According to Police Report

New details have emerged in the "mysterious" death of Leslie Carter, and it appears the 25-year-old sister of Nick and Aaron Carter died as a result of an overdose.

Three prescription drugs found near her body, according to the police report.

The report was taken by officials who responded to the 911 call. The three prescription bottles found were Olanzapine, used to treat schizophrenia and/or bipolar disorder, the muscle relaxant Cyclobenzaprine, and the anxiety medication Xanax.

Leslie Carter Picture

Official autopsy results have yet to be released pending toxicology tests, but a source tells E! News that family members believe Leslie overdosed on pills.

Per the police report, Leslie's stepmother Ginger found Leslie Carter's unresponsive body around 4:10 p.m. on January 31 and immediately dialed 911.

Leslie and her daughter (she was estranged from her on-again, off-again husband) were living with her father, Robert, in Buffalo and, a source says.

There, she had been trying to wean herself off her medication.

After her body was found, Robert performed CPR, though Leslie was ultimately pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:59 p.m. According to Ginger, Leslie "seemed okay in the morning but at times seemed depressed just by the way she was talking."

Earlier that day, Ginger said Leslie had fallen in the shower and proceeded to sleep through the afternoon while she cared for the 10-month-old baby.

Robert came home later that afternoon and found Leslie not breathing or responding. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.

Incidentally, it was also noted in the police report that Ginger, while detailing these events, was also getting "progressively worse," with slurred speech and that authorities noted that she, too, appeared to "be overdosing on her medication."

She said she took an extra Xanax in the wake of her stepdaughter's death.

NC's Heath Shuler won't seek re-election to House

WASHINGTON (AP) ? North Carolina Democrat Heath Shuler won't seek re-election to the House.

The former professional football player, a frequent critic of House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, announced in a statement Thursday that he will not seek a fourth House term.

Shuler says he and his family have discussed his running for governor, but Shuler's statement does not reveal any decisions. Shuler says he intends to spend more time with his wife and two young children.

Republicans in the North Carolina legislature redrew the state congressional lines, making Shuler's district more friendly to the GOP.

HBT: Valentine not worried about his shortstop

Red Sox fans don?t seem to be terribly pleased with the team?s current shortstop options:?Mike Aviles and Nick Punto. ?But Bobby Valentine is kind of cool with it:

?I?ve never seen any of the guys play except for Punto a little on television. We?ve got seven weeks together, we?ll practice together, we?ll play together, that will all work itself out,? Valentine said. ?I think it?s always good for guys to get a chance to work and think they have a chance to make the team so they work a little harder.?

And maybe he should be. As Alex Speier of WEEI points out in a great column today, there is no reason to assume that a team can?t win a world championship with veterans, castoffs and glorified utility guys playing at short. Happens all the time, in fact.

If I had to guess I?d say that the Sox are going to keep close tabs on any shortstop who may become available as the season progresses. But really, there are worse things that can happen to be somewhat unsettled there. ?Like, you know, having a lot of question marks in the rotation.

State Dept: Americans take refuge at Cairo embassy

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Several American citizens have taken shelter in the U.S. Embassy in Cairo amid a sharpening dispute between Washington and Egypt's military-led authorities over U.S.-funded pro-democracy groups in the country, the State Department said on Monday.

"We can confirm that a handful of U.S. citizens have opted to stay in the embassy compound in Cairo while waiting for permission to depart Egypt," State Department spokeswoman Kate Starr said.

According to The New York Times, colleagues confirmed at least two American citizens were being protected at the embassy?from potential arrest.

The unusual step of offering U.S. citizens diplomatic refuge follows Cairo's crackdown on non-governmental organizations, including several funded by the U.S. government, which saw travel bans imposed on six American staffers including a son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

State Department officials said they did not believe the Americans were in any physical danger, but said they had "concerns given the fact that they want to leave the country and were disallowed."

"There is no expectation any of these individuals are seeking to avoid any kind of judicial process," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said. "Our view is that these people ought to be able to travel freely, that we need to expedite the process of whatever kind of formal registration is ultimately going to be allowed for them, if their property needs to be returned, and that it is in the interest of Egypt's democratic transition not only for international democracy NGOs to be able to operate but for Egyptian democracy NGOs to be able to operate, and that they have already played a strong role in supporting the good elections that have already taken place, and there are more elections coming up."

Raids and crackdown
Egyptian police first raided the groups in late December as part of an investigation into foreign funding of 17 pro-democracy and human rights groups, part of what civil society groups say has been a broader crackdown on critics of the army's heavy-handed tactics in dealing with street unrest.

Washington has strongly criticized the Egyptian move, which has cast a pall over U.S.-Egypt relations as the most populous Arab nation reaches a critical stage in its uncertain transition away from authoritarian rule.

Leading U.S. lawmakers have also voiced outrage over the incident, and American officials have repeatedly warned that Washington may have to take a fresh look at U.S. aid to Egypt's military, which now runs about $1.3 billion per year.

The six U.S. citizens hit with travel bans work with the National Democratic Institute and International Republican Institute. Both receive U.S. public funding and are loosely affiliated with the two major political parties in Washington.

The State Department did not provide details on the Americans sheltering in the embassy, although officials at the NDI said none of their staff had been relocated.

U.S. officials said an Egyptian military delegation was expected in Washington this week for regular talks, which are nevertheless expected to focus in large part on the impasse over the NGOs.

U.S. expresses concern over restrictions
President Barack Obama spoke with the head of Egypt's ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, on January 20 and stressed the importance of the NGOs, as well as Egypt's request for $3.2 billion in support from the International Monetary Fund.

In a weekend call to Tantawi, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta urged the Egyptians to take steps to lift the travel ban on Americans wishing to leave the country, and expressed concern over restrictions placed on NGOs, the Pentagon said.

The Obama administration is finalizing its budget for the 2013 fiscal year, which will be presented on February 13 and is expected to include continued assistance for Egypt's military, albeit subject to new conditions imposed by U.S. lawmakers.

Those include evidence that Egyptian military authorities are committed to holding free and fair elections and implementing policies to protect freedom of expression, association, and religion, and due process of law.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
